      The City of Edinburgh Council is the local government authority for the City of Edinburgh. It was created in under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act , with the boundaries of the post City of Edinburgh district of the Lothian region. When created in , Edinburgh North and Leith was largely a replacement for the Edinburgh Leith constituency, and was one of six constituencies covering the City of Edinburgh council area. One of those six, Edinburgh East and Musselburgh straddled the boundary with the East Lothian council area, to take in Musselburgh.

    Edinburgh Central is a burgh constituency of the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood). It elects one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the plurality (first past the post) method of election. Also, it is one of nine constituencies in the Lothian electoral region, which elects seven additional memb.
